How To Play Black Jack

Black jack is a relatively simple game to master if you know the basics. There are certain rules and strategies when it comes to learning how to play black jack and many of them are simple to understand and grasp. The first thing you need to understand about black jack are the basic rules that govern the game. The whole goal of the game is to get a hand that is as close to 21 as possible without going over.

If you get a 21 on your first deal without having to hit, it is called a black jack. The dealer gives each player two cards to begin with, depending on the value of the two cards you have been dealt you can either, hit, stand, split, or double down. The value of the cards are as follows, Aces are either 1 or 11, cards 2 through 9 are their face value, and face cards and 10s count for 10. If you receive a hand that is satisfactory and you decide to stand, or stay on that value, and you match the value of the dealer it is called a push and you receive your initial bet back with no increase or additional money.

Say for instance that you get two 8’s on your first deal. In this instance you can split your pair to create two hands. In this case, each hand will receive additional cards and you can stand, hit, split, or double down on those cards. You will have an additional bet on the second hand you create. In the case of doubling down, when you double down you are given the option to double your bet on a two card hand. When you do this you will receive only one additional card and your bet will be doubled. Say for instance you have a 8 and a 3 and you choose to double down. Your bet will be doubled and you will receive one more card to complete that hand.

Hitting and standing are a bit easier to understand and are the basic moves that you will need to concern yourself. When you hit you are adding cards to your hand. If you decide to stand, it means that you are satisfied with the value of your hand and that you do not wish to receive any additional cards.

One important thing to remember is that the dealer always stands on 17 or higher and hits on a soft 17. A soft hand means that you have an Ace and another card which means that left alone the Ace counts as ten but if you hit it counts as 1. Another important principle to understand is insurance, this is offered to players when the dealer receives an Ace on their first card. This is not always a good thing for the players however. Insurance means that you can bet up to half of your original bet to be paid at 2:1 odds if the dealer turns over a 10 or face card. In some games you will be given the chance to surrender or fold your hand, but this option is not available in all games. If you do not understand the rules of black jack it is far better to ask questions than go in blind.
